The Helmsman

Centre for Mega Projects

Improving complex capital asset delivery and sustainment through world-class research, advocacy and industry development.

The Helmsman Centre for Mega Projects will put Australia at the cutting-edge of infrastructure development for the Asia-Pacific region and drive both Australian and regional economic growth.

Currently, international centres linked to the Helmsman Centre are being established in Canada and India.

In Europe, ongoing collaborations continue with colleagues at VU Amsterdam, Professor Bent Flyvbjerg, University of Oxford and Professor Tyrone Pitsis Leeds University Business School.

Many major infrastructure projects suffer delays and cost overruns because the complexity they face is not well understood and managed.

Delivering a project is not just about better engineering; some of the world’s best engineers are already working on these projects.

It’s about both the public and private sectors working together to establish the right political and operating environment. It’s also about organisations and executives understanding how to manage the wider complexities.

The Centre has the following two objectives:

  • Objective 1: Deliver a measurable improvement to the Australian economy
  • Objective 2: Be the Australian reference example for University / Industry Innovation
